Barbara Lynn Caraway, 77, a cherished mother, granny and friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Ranger, Texas, on December 29, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Barbara was born on August 3, 1947, in Jefferson, Texas, to Edna Faye Davlin. As a child, she grew up in Kildare, Texas, with her grandparents, Werta and Frank Davlin. She graduated from Linden-Kildare High School. After graduating high school, she married Walter Wells in Odessa, Texas. The couple had four children: Jerry, Michael, James and Steven. After divorcing, she met the love of her life, John Wayne Caraway of Ranger. They spent more than 30 years together living in the La Casa community, north of Ranger. Following John Wayne’s death in 2016, she moved to Ranger and lived with her mother.
Barbara was a beautiful soul who was hardworking, strong and generous beyond belief. Her love language was cooking, no one went hungry in her presence. She enjoyed working in cafe's and owned several throughout her lifetime, and enjoyed connecting with the community. She was also a certified hairstylist, owning “The Best Little Hairhouse in Texas” while her children were young. Later, she owned a flower shop in Strawn, Texas, and operated the Quad City Messenger in Strawn-Gordon for a short time. Her hobbies included sewing, crafting, fishing, camping and going at least once a month with her close friend, Gloria Castro, to Oklahoma to the casino to play her slot machines. She loved to spend time at the casinos, where she often contributed to other’s winnings.
Barbara was passionate about her husband, John Wayne, who was the love of her life and she loved her family fiercely and unconditionally. She followed her children and grandchildren to various sporting events throughout the state over the years.
She is survived by survived by her son, Jerry Allen Wells and wife, Vicki Lynn of Odessa, Texas; and grandchildren: J.C. and Seila Stone of Odessa, Texas; Justin Wells of Odessa, Texas; Heather Beeman of Andrews, Texas; Meagan and Tommy Keyser of Ranger, Texas; Zachary and Chelsea Stone of Odessa, Texas, Mat and Tamarah Wells of Odessa, Texas, Stormy Wells of Ranger, Texas; Crystal and Daniel Plascencia of Ranger, Texas; Tyler and Kelsey Wells of Kansas, James Wells, Jr. of Ranger, Texas, and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Wayne Davlin and wife, June, of Ranger; Glenda Thompson of Saginaw, Texas; Tommy Wells and wife, Pattie, of Colorado City, Texas; and John Armstrong, of Giddings, Texas. Funeral services for Barbara were held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Ronny Guess officiating. Interment followed at Macedonia Cemetery in Stephens County. A visitation was held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Ranger, Texas.
